Fifty Seasons of Golden Basketball under the Pines of Zlatibor

Just over 200 kilometers southwest of Belgrade, above Užice, lies the mountainous beauty of Serbia – Zlatibor. The mountain, after which the golden pines were named, has, over the past five decades, become the cradle of a very special world – the world of basketball.

Fifty seasons ago, sports workers from Belgrade, Užice, and Čačak launched the idea of creating a basketball camp on Zlatibor. The idea did not remain just on paper – it was realized thanks to the enthusiasm and expertise of the coaches and sports workers who stood behind it. Support was provided by the Basketball Federation of Serbia and the then-Yugoslav Federation, and what started as an idea quickly grew into a movement.

Unlike traditional selection systems, the Zlatibor camp opened its doors to everyone – regardless of height, strength, talent, or prior experience. Here, the goal was not to learn to play – here, you played to learn. Cooperation, unity, and the development of each individual came before the results. The camp knew no rejection – every child was welcome.

In addition to sports work, the camp became a life school. Boys and girls came as if they were at home. They were welcomed with sports fields, healthy food, comfortable accommodation, sports equipment, but also praise, motivation, and friendships. For many, Zlatibor became the place of their first basketball steps, but also of life lessons.

Among the many basketball players who have passed through the camp, two names hold a special place: Aleksandar Đorđević and Predrag Danilović. Their backcourt partnership, which Europe still remembers, was honed right on the Zlatibor courts. Their talent and hard work, shaped in the camp, turned into an art form on the court.

In 1991, the “Junior” social organization was founded within the camp, with the goal of promoting children’s and youth sports. Its basic principle – that no child should be deprived of the opportunity to play sports – changed the traditional selection patterns. “Junior” included, it did not exclude. It was the extended arm of the camp’s philosophy.

A special part of the story is dedicated to Mihajlo “Miki” Pavićević, the coach and visionary who lived for the camp for 33 years. He was its founder, soul, and driving force. Miki gathered what they called “Zlatibor’s sages” – top coaches who selflessly shared their knowledge with children. The work program, which was perfected over the decades, was, at one point, brought to perfection with the help of Professor Aleksandar Nikolić and collaborators Ratko Joksić and Dimče Kofileski. This program became the foundation – the “holy scripture” for all the coaches who worked at the camp.

“Miki was more than a man – he was the symbol of the camp: a smile, organization, hospitality, humor, enthusiasm, love for basketball and people,” says one of the camp’s founders, Bratislav Bata Đorđević. “We are grateful for everything he left us.”

After Miki’s passing in 2009, his son Dušan Pavićević, who himself grew up in the camp, took on the responsibility of preserving what his father had created. Miloš Đorđević, also a child of the camp, joined him. With the help of Ratko Joksić, who continues to be the expert pillar of this institution, the camp entered its sixth decade of existence – stronger and more modern than ever.

To date, more than 40,000 children from at least 40 countries have passed through the camp. Over 20 national selectors have shared their knowledge, and more than 50 national team players have been part of the camp’s work as participants and demonstrators.

Gratitude is owed to many – the parents who have trusted the camp for half a century, the donors and sponsors who made its survival possible, the media that follow every season, and the Basketball Federation of Serbia, which recognized its value. And, as the organizers say – to both friends and enemies, because both have contributed to the camp’s longevity and its improvement.

The Zlatibor Basketball Camp is not just a sports center. It is a movement, a vision, a home. Fifty seasons are behind us – and all have been golden. May the next decade be as successful!
