Sektor A6

”Unlimitedness in every sense, embracing all differences, being open to new things and shifting your perception when you’ve been stuck in one for too long. Surrendering to your feelings, even when they aren’t love, but heavy pain instead.”

What drives you?
Laughter.

All of these are my children…
Stevan Božanović, Katarina Pinterović, Sanja Demirović, Irena Živković, and Sara Jovanović.

We are all children of Sector-A6, and at the same time, we are all mothers and fathers to Sector-A6. It’s a paradox that’s hard to understand if you’re not part of this group yourself. We make mistakes, act immature at times, give in to playfulness and spontaneity, but at the same time, we behave responsibly, warn each other when we go too far, give advice, and care for one another.

What else do you do?
The largest part of our creative output consists of spatial installations, most often interactive. But beyond that, we are textile and fashion designers, performers, painters, illustrators, experimental artists, jewelry designers, writers, poets, photographers… So the scope of what we do is wide and diverse.

What should an artist possess—qualities and skills?
A wild, unrestrained, childlike imagination. Then a creative environment that provides endless inspiration. In our case, friends with ideas without limits. Limitlessness in every sense, embracing all differences, being open to new things and to shifting perception when you’ve been stuck in one. Surrendering to feelings, even when they aren’t love, but heavy pain. And certainly, crossing the boundaries of comfort.

There are also things that go without saying, but we won’t talk about them. And these definitions are only for those who don’t see themselves as artists, to better understand us. Artists already know what is needed.

Criticism? Who and what can influence your work?…presentation of the work?
Irena, Katarina, Sanja, Stevan, and Sara can influence my work. The way a piece develops after the initial idea depends primarily on their critiques. They are the strictest critics, each quite different, and often they even clash, but very good decisions always emerge from these constructive discussions. After them, though no less important, are the people who visit our exhibitions and often participate in shaping our works, completing them. We are not “open” in a casual sense, but we value their positive or negative critiques, and our further development and progress depend on them.

Who is your superhero? Who are today’s superheroes?
All young people who dare to start something of their own—innovative, specific, new… People who don’t follow templates but create their own templates, which they don’t impose on anyone but form for themselves. People free of all prejudices, aiming for a better self and a better world. In the world of music, there are many of them now, but in fact, they are everywhere—you’ve probably walked past them every day.

What does isolation mean to you?
A period of incubation in which you mature. Something like a greenhouse where you create the conditions you need to cultivate yourself. It can also be something completely different, but ultimately, it’s up to us what we choose. And we choose the first.

What good can come out of this situation?
This follows from the previous answer. From what we choose emerge shaped, fresh ideas, a greater desire to step out tomorrow as a more aware, educated, emotional, attentive, tactile, creative, prepared, and experienced person.

Do you have a TV at home?
No. We don’t like media that provide limited information. We prefer to think for ourselves.

Do you listen to the radio?
Yes, often, but mostly the stations that play music.

Bicycle or walking?
Four walking and one on a scooter.

Are you vegan or vegetarian?
Some of us are, some of us aren’t.

Beer or wine?
Some beer, some wine. Sometimes all beer, sometimes all wine. It depends on the occasion and situation—whether we’re in a café, on a park bench, or in a bohemian atmosphere. Lately, though, it’s been tea and coffee with honey whiskey.

Do you recycle?
We don’t have many opportunities for that in Serbia, but whenever possible, yes. We are great lovers of nature and the planet we inhabit, and we try to nurture and protect it. There may be other planets, but this one accepted us first, and it deserves thanks.

Book / Film?
Book first, then film.

And music…?
Always, everywhere, at every moment. We find great inspiration in music. It’s a huge motivator and often part of our projects. We collaborated with pianist Katarina Ranković at our solo exhibition and hope for future collaborations with many fresh musicians.
