Marija Čalić

”An artist needs to build their own language,
they should observe both the world around them and
themselves, to doubt, but also to trust themselves and
the reasons behind their decisions.”

What drives you?
I am driven primarily by ideas, by optimism as much as by pessimism, hence the good as well as the bad, and similar opposites.

All of these are my children…
I wonder, I wonder…

What else do you do?
I believe it is possible to be an artist in everything you do (creatively and with dedication), so I practice that skill all day long.

What should an artist possess—qualities and skills?
An artist needs to build their own language, to observe both the world around them and themselves, to doubt but also to trust themselves and the reasons behind their decisions.

Criticism? Who or what can influence your work? …the presentation of your work?
I am convinced that literature, as much as music, can influence my work more than other photographers.

Who is your superhero? Who are today’s superheroes?
I don’t have superheroes; I didn’t have them even at 16 when they could still appear. Now I am completely sure I won’t encounter them.

What does isolation mean to you?
Isolation is a completely natural state for me. I enter it when I want to rest from the outside world, think about something, and make an important decision. Of course, this is voluntary isolation…

What good can come from this situation?
Unnatural, forced isolation is unpleasant for anyone… it is even frightening. Perhaps what is even scarier is the uncertainty of what kind of world we will live in tomorrow.

Do you have a TV at home?
I generally don’t pay attention to TV; everything happens in front of other screens.

Do you listen to the radio?
Sometimes.

Bicycle or sand?
On foot.

Are you vegan or vegetarian?
Yes, sometimes…

Beer or wine?
It depends on the context.

Do you recycle?
I’m not that systematic.

Book / Film?
Flaubert… Huxley…
